Why the First Monsoon Is the Real Test of a Window
Most window leaks show up in the first heavy Ahmedabad monsoon. Here’s where water gets in — gaskets, drainage, silicone, sills — and what to check.

In Ahmedabad, the real test of a window isn’t the summer. It’s the first monsoon.
For most of the year, a badly sealed window can look perfect. The frames are straight, the glass is clean and everything slides. Then the first heavy, wind-driven rain arrives, and water finds its way onto the sill, down the wall or across the floor.
This guide explains why that happens, where water actually gets in, and what to check before the rains — whether your windows are brand new or have been in for years.
Why the dry months hide problems
For eight months or so, a window mostly deals with sun and dust. Small gaps don’t matter when there’s no water to push through them.
Monsoon rain is different. It doesn’t just fall; it’s driven sideways by the wind, and it can keep coming for hours. Wind pressure pushes water into gaps that would stay dry in light rain, and water running down a building collects at sills, frame corners and tracks. The first heavy storms of the season are often the first time a new window faces those conditions at all.
Heat plays a part too. Through the summer, frames, glass, walls and sealants expand and contract every day. A sealant that was applied carelessly, or a joint that was never properly packed, can open up just enough to let water in when the rain comes.
Where water actually gets in
When a window leaks, people tend to blame the window. In practice, water usually comes through one of a handful of routes.
The gap between the frame and the wall
This is the most common leak path. The frame sits in an opening in the masonry, and the joint between them has to be packed and sealed properly all the way round. If it isn’t — or if the plaster, stone or tile work around the frame is finished badly — water tracks through the wall and appears inside, often below the window.
The outside sill matters as well. A sill that slopes back towards the frame, or has nothing to throw water clear of the wall, sends rain towards the weakest point instead of away from it.
Gaskets
Gaskets are the rubber seals between the glass and the frame, and between the moving sashes and the frame. They do the everyday work of keeping water and air out.
Not all rubber is equal. EPDM gaskets hold up well to heat and sunlight, which is why we use them on every joint. Lower-grade seals can harden, shrink or crack after a few Ahmedabad summers, leaving small gaps at the corners that only show up when it rains.
Drainage in sliding tracks
A sliding window is designed to let a little water into its bottom track and then drain it out through small slots in the outside face of the frame. This is normal, and it works — as long as the slots stay clear.
Dust, grit and construction debris can block them. So can silicone applied by someone who didn’t know what the slots were for. When the drainage is blocked, water rises in the track during heavy rain and spills over the inside edge.
Silicone: helpful and harmful
Structural silicone is an important part of a sealed window when it’s used in the right places. Used badly, it causes problems:
- Smeared across joints, it looks untidy and can fail sooner than a neat, well-bonded bead.
- Run over drainage slots, it traps water inside the frame.
- Added on top of an old, failed seal, it usually just hides the real leak path for a while.
Clean mitres, tight joints and no silicone smears aren’t only about looks. They’re a sign the window was sealed with care.
Frame corners and joints
Where frame sections meet at the corners, the joint has to be cut accurately and sealed. A poorly made corner can let water into the frame itself, which then finds its way out somewhere unexpected.
Overhead glass and glass fronts face it harder
Some glazing takes more of the weather than an ordinary window.
Skylights and other overhead glazing sit flat or at a low angle, so rain lies on the glass instead of running off quickly. Every joint has to be sealed with care, because gravity is working against you.
Large glass fronts on shops and offices take wind-driven rain across a big area. In structural glazing, the glass is bonded to the frame with structural silicone and the joints between panels are sealed — and the quality of that sealing decides how the façade performs in its first monsoon and every one after it.
Even ordinary aluminium windows on an exposed upper-floor wall face harsher conditions than the same window on a sheltered ground floor.
What to check before the rains
A short check in May or early June catches most problems before they cause damage:
- Clean the sliding tracks. Brush or vacuum out dust and grit, especially from the corners.
- Clear the drainage slots. Look at the outside of the bottom frame and make sure the slots are open.
- Look at the gaskets. They should sit snugly, with no gaps at the corners and no cracking or shrinkage.
- Check the sealant around the frame. Look for cracks, gaps or places where it has pulled away from the wall.
- Close every window firmly. Casements should pull tight against their seals, and sliding sashes should close fully against the frame.
- Look at the sills. Water should run away from the frame, not towards it.
- Watch the first storm. If water comes in, note exactly where it appears. It helps whoever fixes it.
If a window already leaks
Resist the urge to run a bead of silicone over the outside and hope for the best. It rarely fixes the cause, and it can make the real problem harder to find.
Instead, work out where the water is coming from: the joint between frame and wall, a gasket, the track drainage or a corner joint. The fix depends entirely on the route. Sometimes it’s as simple as clearing blocked drainage or replacing a gasket; sometimes the joint around the frame needs to be sealed again properly.
